Description


Objectives

  • Presentation of the conversion potential of the Kyrgyz Republic.
  • Review of both funded and proposed ISTC projects in the fields of radioecology, seismology, geology, climatic research, medical and biological technologies, and physics and measurement techniques.
  • Discussion of the main trends of further development of ISTC projects and activities in Kyrgyzstan.

Sessions have been conducted in the following areas:

1. Problems of radiation security and radioecology.
2. Prediction, monitoring, and remediation of severe earthquakes.
3. Practices and technology of the mining industry.
4. Climatic-ecological problems.
5. Medical and biological problems.
6. Physics, measurement techniques, and communication.

Location

The seminar is being held at a sanatorium of the KR Government located on the shore of the warm mountain lake Issyk-Kul: with clean air, pure water, sunny days, and fine beaches. There are also video halls, a cafe, a restaurant, sports grounds and gyms in the sanatorium.

7.09.98 Departure to Issyk-Kul of the local ISTC project managers.
Registration in the sanatorium and opening of the Seminar. Welcoming speeches. Reception.
8.09.98 Presentation of reports.
9.09.98 Boat trip to Kara-Kol. Visit to lidar station at Teplokluchenka. Poster presentations.
10.09.98 Presentation of reports. Closing session.
11.09.98 Departure to Bishkek. Visit to seismic station.
12-13.09.98 Departure of seminar participants.

The seminar program includes visits to two research laboratories at Issyk-Kul and the seismic station located at Ala-Archa Natural Park, sightseeng tours to Semenov Canyon, and a boat trip across Issyk-Kul to the lidar station. During the trip poster presentations will be given for all the proposed seminar sections.

Papers and Official Language

The primary languages of the seminar will be Russian and English. All sessions will be provided with translation. Seminar reports will be published in Russian and English with consecutive translation. The papers approved by the Program Committee will be included in the proceedings. A CD-ROM with Kyrgyz ISTC projects and seminar reports in hypertext form is also planned.

The seminar participants will be those persons confirmed by their own organizations and receiving invitations from the host organization. Those who wish to attend the seminar without giving a presentation (talk or poster session) should complete and return the application form below to Dr. Vitaly Kovalenko (to the address below, or or use E-mail) by July 1, 1998.

For those who wish to make a presentation a complete seminar application includes the following:
  1. Completed seminar application form.
  2. Paper proposal in both English and Russian (if possible)

The proposal should be written in Word for Windows.
These applications should be sent to Dr. Kovalenko (see address below or use E-mail) by May 15, 1998.
    Papers should be sent by E-mail (preferred) or mail to Dr. Kovalenko so as to arrive by June 15, 1998. (See addresses and fax number below.) Papers received by mail or fax later than the deadline are not guaranteed to be included in the book.

    Paper Guidelines
    1. Papers are to be prepared in electronic form in the Times New Roman or Time New Roman Cyrillic 12-point font with one-and-a-half line spacing on À4-size paper in Word for Windows.
    2. The paper title is to be displayed in all capital letters and centered. Three lines below this the authors’ initials and last names should appear (not in all caps). Three lines further down the summary and main text begin. The summary should be no more than ten lines long.
    3. The margins are 2.5 ñm from the edges of the page.
    4. The paper should be credited to all authors. If there are more than one of them, then name of presenter should be mentioned.
    5. Tables and drawings should be included in the text rather than grouped at the end of paper. Table titles should be above and drawing titles below the figures.
    6. Append a resume on the authors, not more than ten lines per every person, recording their main achievements and publications. (Optional)

    Additional information

    The Host Organization provides :
    • visa support in Kyrgyzstan
    • meeting and departure of the guests, transportation to Bishkek and Cholpon-Ata
    • round-trip tickets reservation by prior arrangement
    • transportation service for the foreign guests for the whole period

    The local unit of currency is the som. In exchange offices you can convert Russian rubles, US dollars and DM. Other kinds of currency are difficult or costly to exchange. The exchange rate on January 1, 1998 was : 1 USD=17.5 som; 1 DM = 10 som.

    The travel for all the participants, except for the Kyrgyz portion, will be at their own expense, with no honoraria.
    Prominent scholars from the countries of the ISTC funding parties will be invited to give the overview reports in each session.
    The organizers reserve the right to decline papers or shift them to poster presentations.

    Please note: All the payments are by cash only (except at the Dostuk Hotel in Bishkek). VisaCards are accepted in some Bishkek banks, with 3% commission.
